Kam Robinson tore his ACL during the Duke game last season resulting in the end of his season and putting 2026-27 in question. The injury was detrimental towards the end of the season keeping the Cavaliers play-making defender out of the ACC Championship game.
ACC Media Days commenced in July giving fans and media its first looks at what Virginia could look like in 2026. Kam Robinson was one of the participants and said many times in many different interviews that he was aiming to be back by week one to play against NC State.
When ACC availability reports were made public throughout the week, Kam Robinson was listed as questionable all week long. Head Coach Tony Elliott said at his weekly press conference that Robinson would be a “Gametime decision,” mentioning that Robinson would be watched closely during warmups. A torn ACL is almost always at least a 12-month recovery process, Kam Robinson was progressing towards a return in 9.
Kam led the team out of the tunnel for warm-ups 40 minutes prior to gametime and seemed to be moving around well. Unfortunately for Kam Robinson and Wahoo nation, he would be kept out of the contest wearing street clothes on the sideline for gametime.
In hindsight, it feels like a wonderful decision by the coaching staff to hold Kam out, as Virginia was PERFECTLY fine without him, holding the Wolfpack to just 8 points all game. NC State QB CJ Bailey was held to 84 passing yards and nothing got going on the run. Virginia beat NC State 34-8, one of the most thrilling season openers in recent memory. In retrospect, Kam Robinson’s absence was not loud at all. Landon Danley, Caleb Hardy, and Maddox Marcellus filled the void excellently.
When asked how close Robinson was to playing, Coach Tony Elliott replied, “It was close, he probably could have played, I didn’t feel great about it, since he only had one full week of practice.” Coach Elliott mentioned he felt much better about the idea of Kam having 3 full weeks of practice and returning against Norfolk State with much more contact under his belt.
The decision from the coaching staff makes perfect sense, entering the NC State game was expected to be a massive challenge for a season opener. It certainly felt risky for Robinson to go out there, especially since he would have likely put his body on the line a couple of times. This way, he can play limited snaps versus Norfolk State, which will likely be a blowout. Against Norfolk State Robinson can play multiple different roles in working back to 100% and will not need to play the full game.
If you are a Cavalier fan, there is no reason to panic that Kam Robinson did not play Saturday, it was all precautionary and in safety. It worked out really well due to the dominance Virginia laid on NC State.
