Is Coach Odom Playing Chess While Other Coaches Play Checkers?

There’s a scenario floating around that sounds crazy until you really think it through. What if the NCAA moved to a true five years to play five years model starting right now? Not everyone comes back, only the guys who finished in four years and still have that fifth year available. Anyone who already used five years would still be done, so this wouldn’t be total chaos, but it would be enough to shake things up across the country. Programs that thought they were finished would suddenly have real decisions to make again. Coaches who believed their rosters were set would be right back in evaluation mode.

The ripple effect would still be huge. The NCAA would almost have to reopen the transfer portal, because you can’t give players eligibility and not give them options. Some guys would come back to their current teams, others would test the waters one more time, and now you’ve got a second wave of roster movement. Teams that already filled their scholarships would be stuck trying to figure out how to make it all fit. NIL money would shift quickly, because now you’re re-recruiting proven players, not just adding new ones. Younger guys and incoming players would feel it the most, because suddenly those minutes they thought were there might not be anymore.

Now bring it back to UVA, and this is where it gets interesting. While a lot of programs rushed to fill every spot, the Hoos have stayed patient. No panic additions, no forcing pieces just to say you landed someone, and still multiple open spots sitting there. That hasn’t always felt great in the moment, because fans want action, but what if that patience ends up being the advantage? In a situation like this, UVA wouldn’t be scrambling, they’d be ready.

A guy like Jacari White potentially getting that fifth year becomes a game changer. Now you’re not replacing production, you’re adding to a core that’s already returning a lot and already proven it can play. This isn’t a rebuild either way, it’s a continuation, and that matters. Bringing him back would raise the ceiling, not define whether you have one. Now think of all the other teams across the country that have their own “Jacari White” player, but no roster spots left to offer. Coach Odom could be in position to have his pick of the litter with proven, high ceiling players. That’s how teams go from good to really dangerous without having to start over.

This is where Ryan Odom deserves a ton of credit. Year one showed a clear identity, faster pace, more freedom, and still defending at a high level. Year two now has a chance to build on that instead of resetting it, and that’s a big deal. While others might be trying to fix roster logjams or backtrack decisions, UVA is sitting there with flexibility and options. It’s hard not to look at it and think Odom might be playing chess while others are playing checkers.

Nobody knows if the NCAA would actually do something like this, but the idea tells you everything about where UVA stands. The teams that benefit most will be the ones that stayed patient and kept options open. That’s exactly what the Hoos have done. Year two under Odom already feels like it has a chance to match or even top what we saw in year one, and a scenario like this would only raise that ceiling.
