Head Coach Tony Elliott took the podium today at his weekly press conference. When Elliott was asked about the status of a few Cavaliers… it was not pretty I’ll put it that way.
CB – Omillio Agard – Out for the season due to a torn ACL. Agard has pretty much been a staple at CB1 for Virginia this season, unfortunately, Elliott delivered the news that he is done for the season after tearing his ACL. Agard was scheduled for surgery Tuesday.
DE – Devon Baxter – Out for some time due to his shoulder. Baxter who has played as a role guy coming off the edge will be missing some time after getting surgery Tuesday for his shoulder. Elliott said the surgery was for a Labrum repair.
CB – Jacobie Henderson – Active with a shoulder injury. Coach Elliott said Henderson should be active for the SMU game Saturday after injuring his shoulder against Syracuse.
S – Brandyn Hillman – Day to day with an ankle injury – Hillman has been dealing with an ankle injury week by week. Tony Elliott explained that it is nagging and he will have to play through it, but he will probably be a gametime decision Saturday at noon.
WR – Rico Flores – Out – Elliott did not disclose the exact injury that Flores is dealing with. He did however explain that Flores had some imaging done Tuesday night, and he has not seen the results yet, all he knows is he will not be available Saturday. Based on my observations at the Syracuse game, I believe Flores tore his ACL and will be done for the season, I do not know for sure but that is just my guess based on it being a non-contact injury and the way he was helped off the field.
So, who will fill these voids that are being left open? Assuming that Henderson will be healthy and ready to go Saturday, he will be cornerback 1. After Henderson, Justin Ross the Navy transfer will be filling a void, Jam Jackson, and even Josiah Persinger. If Hillman is not ready to go at safety, a mixture of Montino Williams and Christian Ellis will be playing that role alongside Ethan Minter. The other main hole that needs to be filled is wide receiver. With Flores out, Da’Shawn Martin will step up as the number one wide out, followed by Ty’Lyric Coleman, Jacquan Gibson, Isaiah Robinson, Josiah Abdullah, and even Tyson Davis.
All of this already joins DT Jason Hammond who was done for the year. It can’t get any worse than this right? RIGHT?? (Check back next week if someone else important goes down).
