Coach Roussell: Did We Just Become Best Friends

There are press conferences you watch, and then there are ones you actually feel. This one felt different.

Listening to Aaron Roussell, it didn’t come across like a coach passing through or setting up his next move. It felt like someone who understands exactly what UVA is and truly values being here. Not a stepping stone, a destination.

That came through in how he carried himself. No buzzwords, no forced energy, just a normal guy who has worked his way up and appreciates the moment. The kind of coach you feel like you could grab a beer with, talk about life, family, and basketball without it ever feeling staged. A “super dad” vibe, grounded, relatable, but still fully in command.

And there’s real substance behind that personality.

His teams consistently improve as the season goes on, which matters when everything in college basketball is judged in March. His offense is well-designed, structured with purpose, but still gives players the freedom to make plays. That balance is where good teams become dangerous.

You’re already seeing signs of belief in him. Erica Gribble flipping from Richmond to UVA is a strong early signal that players trust what he’s building. Olivia McGhee announcing her return adds another layer of momentum and stability.

And it’s hard not to think about Mo in all of this. If she gets in a room with him, hears him out, and feels what a lot of us felt watching that press conference, you can’t help but hope it resonates the same way.

Give credit to Carla Williams, this feels like a strong, intentional hire.

From my seat, this wasn’t just a solid first impression. It felt like UVA may have found exactly the right fit at the right time.

And yeah… I like this guy. Go Hoos!

  1. Same here, man. I read that the daughter of Shaq O’Neal – Me’Arah O’Neal, 6’4 from Florida who averaged 13.6 points and 6.4 rebounds has entered the portal and her three considerations are: Kentucky, Miami and Virginia. Hope she’ll come to Virginia as well.

    1. Yes. One of his assts. came from Florida, so a clear connection. Would be cool to have Shaq on grounds as well!
