There are certain players who just feel like they were meant to wear the orange and blue, even if the stay in Charlottesville was shorter than anyone hoped. Chandler Morris is one of those guys. News broke that Morris has signed an undrafted free agent deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and if you’ve listened to The Cavalier Connection before, you already know why that landing spot feels especially interesting. This is the same quarterback whose game we’ve compared to Baker Mayfield, a comparison Morris himself backed up in a press conference when he said Mayfield is who he models his game after. The similarities show up immediately, from mobility to accuracy to the edge he plays with.
That makes Tampa Bay feel less like a coincidence and more like a calculated decision. Morris likely had multiple opportunities as an undrafted free agent, which makes this landing spot stand out even more. The chance to learn directly from Mayfield, the very player he studies, is about as ideal as it gets for development. Tampa’s quarterback room is also not stacked with untouchable names behind the starter, giving Morris a realistic shot to compete. With Mayfield leading the way and players like Jake Browning in the mix, there is at least a path for Morris to make noise in camp. For a player betting on himself, that matters.
The timing of all this only adds to the story. Morris was not granted the extra year of eligibility he hoped for, which left many UVA fans wanting more. In a matter of weeks, though, everything seems to be falling into place. He got engaged, was named UVA’s Male Athlete of the Year, and now finds himself with an NFL opportunity. That kind of stretch says a lot about both the player and the person Virginia fans came to appreciate so quickly.
For Wahoo fans, this is one of those moments where pride takes over. Morris may not have gotten that extra season, but his impact was real and lasting. Landing in a spot where he can learn from his role model while competing for a roster spot feels like the right next step. If things break his way, this could be more than just a camp story. Go Hoos!

I’d love to see him earn the backup job!
