On this week’s episode of The Cavalier Connection, we welcomed one of the Commonwealth’s brightest young football stars to the show: Damari Carter, a versatile athlete from Verina High School who recently committed to Tony Elliott’s 2026 recruiting class at the University of Virginia.

Carter, a three-star recruit and the No. 26 player in Virginia (per 247Sports Composite), chose the Cavaliers over offers from Virginia Tech and Maryland, citing a strong connection with the UVA staff, a brotherhood among players, and the chance to represent his home state.

“When I got to campus on my official visit, it just felt like home,” Carter said. “The coaches, the players, everyone—it just felt right.”

A Playmaker with Swagger and Versatility

Carter brings an exciting mix of athleticism and toughness to Charlottesville. In 2023, he tallied 1,077 receiving yards and 15 touchdowns, earning First-Team All-State honors. But what sets him apart is his ability to impact the game from all angles—offense, defense, and even special teams.

He’s seen reps at wide receiver, defensive back, kick returner, and even punter—yes, punter.

“I actually like punting,” he said. “It’s fun. I try to kick it higher or farther every time. Why not have fun with it?”

On the offensive side of the ball, he models his game after Davante Adams, but defensively, he says he’s a hybrid—someone who can lay a big hit or snag a pick depending on the moment.

Staying Home, Building Chemistry

Carter’s commitment continues a trend of in-state talent choosing UVA. He joins fellow wide receivers Dylan Cope and Josiah Teasley in the 2026 class, and says their chemistry started building on the very first visit.

“Those are my brothers already. The three of us together? Unstoppable.”

When asked about his commitment ceremony, Carter described it as a “relief.” Though many assumed he was leaning toward Maryland or Virginia Tech, staying home just felt right—and his family will now have the chance to watch him play just a short drive away.

Recruiting Mindset and Future Goals

Not only is Carter excited to get to Grounds, he’s also ready to help build the future of UVA football.

“If I can get my guys up there with me, then that’s the deal,” he said. “I’m definitely going to help recruit.”

Heading into his senior season, his goals are simple: dominate again. He’s focused on improving his speed, strength, and technical reps as he closes out his high school career. He also brings a basketball background to the gridiron, helping him with footwork and physicality.

The Rivalry, the Video Game, and What UVA Fans Should Know

When asked about the UVA–Virginia Tech rivalry, Carter didn’t hesitate: “If I can be there, I’ll be there. We just gotta beat them.” He also knows quite a few Hokies personally—many from his hometown of Richmond—which will make the matchup even sweeter.

He’s also looking forward to seeing himself in the new EA Sports College Football video game on PlayStation.

“I’ve been talking about it since it came out. It’ll feel crazy. Hard work pays off.”

As for what UVA fans should know about him before he arrives on campus?

“I make tough catches. I like to joke around. But when it’s time to lock in, I’m locked in.”

Final Word

Damari Carter’s commitment is another strong step forward for Coach Elliott and the Hoos’ 2026 class. He’s local, he’s driven, and he’s ready to represent Virginia the right way—on and off the field.

We’re excited to watch his journey unfold.
