Virginia Men's Lacross extended its win streak to three Saturday Afternoon after pulling a massive upset against the Fighting Irish, winning 11-9.
The 'Hoos were led Saturday by 2 goals apiece from multiple players including Truitt Sunderland, Joey Torenzi, Brendan Milon, and Hudson Hausmann. Will Inderlied, McCabe Milon, and Ryan Colsey all scored a goal as well. McCabe Milon added on 3 assists while also grabbing a Ground Ball. John Schroter had 5 Ground Balls, followed by Greenspan, Metz, and Marek with 4.
Robby Hopper led the Cavaliers defensively causing 3 turnovers. 2 turnovers were caused by Michael Meridith and John Schroter. Milon, Hausmann, Marek, and Tommy Snyder all caused a turnover defensively. Jake Marek earned the win at Goalkeeper for Virginia making 11 saves and allowing 9 goals. As a team Virginia went 13-10 on faceoffs. "Jake Malek has been playing fantastic lacrosse the last couple weeks." Coach Tiffany explained postgame, "We're measuring goalies based on saves and this is three games in a row we've had double digits of saves and we didn't have that in the beginning of the year. It's a big difference when your goalie makes saves.
Virginia started hot early when Sunderland scored off of the pass from Chase Band. Brendan Millon then scored just over a minute later assisted by McCabe Milon. Notre Dame then scored 2 unassisted goals followed by a third scored by Josh Yago. However, thanks to Joey Torenzi and the pass of Truitt Sunderland, Virginia was able to even the game 3-3 at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter featured Notre Dame scoring three more goals, bettering the two scored by Virginia.
38 seconds into the third quarter, Will Maheras scored for the Fighting Irish, assisted by Josh Yago. Between Ryan Colsey and Truitt Sunderland, Virginia was able to tie the game again, this time 7-7. Eventually, Will Maheras would give Notre Dame another lead with 4:34 seconds remaining in the third. By the end of the quarter, the Fighting Irish led 9-8. After a great pass from McCabe Millon, Joey Torenzi scored a clutch goal with one second remaining tying the game at 9.
Brendan Milon would score goal number 22 of the season at the 3:29 mark to give Virginia the lead in the fourth quarter. Hudson Hausmann scored another goal for insurance with 7 seconds left making it an 11-9 game. Jake Malek made 2 saves in the fourth to defend the net. The time would expire bringing on a great celebration for the 'Hoos, achieving their 6th win of the season. This game proved they can still compete at the top level despite some adversity.
Next week, Virginia will travel to Durham to play Duke, attempting to break a 20 game regular season streak Duke holds over UVA.
