What a Week in UVA Hoops: Roster Shakeups, Transfers, and Staff News

Last week, I said it was a whirlwind week. Well, here we are again, and what a whirlwind week it was for the UVA basketball program. From exciting commitments to surprising departures, the ever-evolving landscape of college basketball was on full display in Charlottesville. Let’s break down the rollercoaster ride that was the week of April 7th in UVA Sports.

Monday Kickoff: Jacari White Joins the Hoos

The week started off strong as we had the chance to interview newly committed Jacari White, a dynamic guard bringing energy and potential to the Cavalier backcourt. His commitment signaled a great start to what would become a flurry of roster activity.

Duke Miles Commits… Then Decommits

Shortly after, Oklahoma transfer guard Duke Miles announced his commitment to the Hoos, becoming the third transfer portal addition and the seventh scholarship player on the roster. However, Miles' time as a Cavalier commit was short-lived. After UVA landed another guard later in the week (more on that below), Miles opted to decommit, likely aiming to preserve his final year of eligibility with a program offering a more defined role.

Martin Carrere Brings International Flair

Coach Odom then made a splash with the addition of Martin Carrere, a 6’8”, 180-pound forward transferring from VCU. Carrere, who has played for France’s U18 national team, is widely regarded as an elite shooter and gifted passer. He brings three years of eligibility to Charlottesville and should benefit from time with renowned strength coach Mike Curtis as he adjusts to the ACC’s physicality.

Veteran Leadership: Dallin Hall from BYU

The guard room got even deeper with the commitment of Dallin Hall, a 6’4” veteran from BYU with one year of eligibility remaining. Hall brings a wealth of experience and athleticism, a true floor general who can be a stabilizing force for a revamped roster. His commitment may have played a part in Duke Miles’ decision to step away, but Hall’s impact could be immediate for the Hoos.

Frontcourt Boost: Devin Tillis Joins from UC Irvine

Rounding out the week’s transfer additions was Devin Tillis, a 6’7” forward from UC Irvine. With averages of 13.7 points and 7.8 rebounds per game, and shooting just under 40% from three, Tillis earned Second Team All-Big West honors last season. He brings another year of eligibility and a well-rounded game that can contribute on both ends of the floor.

Where the Roster Stands Now

With all the movement, here's an updated look at the current roster:

Guards: Jacari White, Sam Lewis, Dallin Hall, Elijah Gertrude, Chance Mallory
Forwards: Devin Tillis, Silas Barksdale, Sam Lewis
Center: Carter Lang

It’s a work in progress, but Coach Odom is clearly building a team that fits his style and vision.

Portal Exits: Elijah Saunders and TJ Power Find New Homes

In addition to new arrivals, two former Hoos found landing spots this week.

  • Elijah Saunders is heading to Maryland

  • TJ Power committed to Penn

We wish them nothing but the best in the next chapters of their careers.

Coaching Changes: Guy and Wilkins Move On

On the coaching front, Kyle Guy and Isaiah Wilkins will not be returning to UVA’s staff. Guy has accepted a position at the University of Nevada—an exciting new opportunity for one of UVA’s most beloved alumni. As for Wilkins, his next step is still unknown, but he’s sure to be an asset wherever he lands. Reports suggest both were offered the chance to stay on in similar roles, but chose to pursue other opportunities.

Final Thoughts: A New Era and a New Energy

It’s safe to say that college basketball is now the Wild West. Commitments and decommitments happen within days, and roster management has become a never-ending task. Still, it’s clear that Coach Odom is wasting no time shaping the team to fit his system.

Yes, there’s still a need for frontcourt depth, and yes—the transfer portal is still wide open. But UVA fans should stay patient and trust the process. Odom is doing the work, targeting players who not only fit positionally but also culturally and stylistically.

Buckle up, Hoos Nation—this offseason is far from over.

As always, Go Hoos!
