Kam Robinson OUT for the season
It was announced Tuesday morning at Coach Tony Elliott's weekly press conference that Mike Linebacker Kam Robinson is OUT for the season with a torn ACL. What does this injury mean for the Virginia Tech game and beyond? We'll discuss.

Virginia fans received about as bad news possible Tuesday morning from Head Coach Tony Elliott at his press conference. That news being that star Linebacker Kam Robinson tore his ACL against Duke and will not return for the remainder of the 2025 season. Coach Elliott explained, "Unfortunately for Kam, got some bad news on his knee, ACL. (He’s) going to have surgery here, so he'll be done for the rest of the season." Robinson exited the game against Duke in the first half with a leg injury, returned for one play, and then sat the rest of the game. Coach Elliott mentioned postgame that the X-Rays came back clean, however, after further evaluation he is certainly done for the season.
So, what does this mean?
The Virginia Tech game Saturday
The immediate concern is Robinson's absence from the matchup against Virginia Tech Thanksgiving weekend. One of the better qualities of the Hokies offense is the run game and not having Robinson will hurt in that sense. Tailback Marcellous Hawkins and QB Kyron Drones both pose serious running threats against the Cavalier defense. Robinson, despite missing the first 3 games of the season, has the second most tackles on the team with 64, only behind Devin Neal who has 66.
Coach Tony Elliott mentioned that it can be expected for Maddox Marcellus to get more snaps to fill the void as well as Landon Danley who helped took a lot of snaps when Robinson was originally out early in the season. "Excited about him (Danley), his opportunity to have a bigger role, and then Maddox (Marcellus) will have to have a bigger role as well with Kam (Robinson) being down." Marcellus and Danley have both combined for around the same number of tackles Robinson has himself. With much less playing time of course. Marcellus also has a sack on the season. Both have had plenty of time in the system and some great reps, alongside a couple of other names I do believe the Virginia defense will be ok against Virginia Tech Saturday without Robinson.
The bigger picture
When you take a look at the bigger picture, the loss of Robinson does take a more significant impact. If Virginia can take care of business against rival Virginia Tech, that puts the 'Hoos in the ACC Championship game in Charlotte the following week. Getting to Charlotte has been one of the biggest goals of this program since the preseason. Coach Elliott mentioned, "They showed up every single day. I think to really sum it up is commitment and people showing up every single day and working even when they couldn't see the light at the end of the tunnel. So, now if we're able to take care of business on Saturday and earn a right to be in Charlotte, just be full circle moment for the program." If Virginia does get to the ACC Championship, Kam Robinson's loss will impact significantly. Playing against potential opponents like SMU, Pitt, or others would pose a big threat to the defense. If you look ahead even further to if UVA wins the ACC, Virginia will then likely get a bid in the College Football Playoffs. Leading to playing a top tier opponent without in my opinion, Virginia's best defensive player.
Kam Robinson's impact on the field extends far beyond being a great piece on the defense. He is a GAME CHANGER. He is a playmaker. Robinson has made arguably three game winning plays this season alone. He had a pick six against Louisville in a very tight defensive game, made a tackle for loss for a safety against Washington State which would ultimately win UVA the game, and a pick six against California which sealed the deal on the west coast. Those plays do not count all of the little things he does between making tackles to prevent big plays, plugging run gaps, and being a vocal leader on the defense.
One of the biggest concerns entering the season for the Cavalier defense was filling the void of the playmaker that Safety Jonas Sanker was. I will right now without a doubt say that Kam Robinson has completely fulfilled that void playing an outstanding season. 64 tackles, 2 sacks, 2 interceptions, and a fumble recovery are the final total stats from Robinson this season.
The biggest picture
What else is significant about this injury? A torn ACL could mean Robinson could miss significant time next season as well. While every case of a torn ACL is not the same, there is a good chance Robinson will not be 100% by next season's opener in what sounds like will be a week 0 battle in Brazil against NC State. The best we can hope for is a speedy recovery in time for next season. The other conversation to be had is if Robinson was even planning on playing with the 'Hoos next season anyways. Between the transfer portal or leaving for the NFL, it was not 100% that Robinson would have returned. If I had to guess, Robinson would not leave in the portal, if he is going to leave it will be for the NFL. However, with this injury all of that is up in the air now.
Regardless of the unknowns, Robinson was without a doubt a game changing linebacker who unfortunately had his season cut short. Elliott commented on Robinson, "Really grateful for all that he did to help the team get to this point. I'm sure that the guys are going to rally around him and support him in his recovery." The rest of the Virginia roster who seems to have a really good locker room will certainly rally around him and play for him.
