Jay Ballard’s 2025–26 UVA Basketball Prediction: Hoos Go Dancing Again Under Ryan Odom
Here we go, folks — year one of the Ryan Odom era. The pace is faster, the faces are newer, and the vibes? Immaculate. After a long offseason of transfers, workouts, and a whole lot of “what will this look like?”, it’s finally time to find out. Spoiler alert: it’s going to be fun.

New Coach, New Look, Same Goals
Odom didn’t come to tear down what Tony Bennett built — he came to remix it. Think of it like a Wahoo classic with a modern beat. You’ll still see smart defense and unselfish play, but now you might also see UVA push the ball, attack early, and maybe even (gasp) score in the 80s every once in a while.
It’s going to take a minute for everyone to click, but once it does? This team’s got real potential to surprise people.
Malik Thomas: Certified Bucket Getter
My pick for leading scorer is Malik Thomas, and it’s not really a tough call. The man just gets buckets. He can score off the dribble, hit tough shots, and has the confidence you need to take over late in games. Pencil him in for about 16 points a night and a couple of “did he really just make that?” moments per game.
He’s the kind of guy who makes you believe every shot’s going in — and sometimes, that’s half the battle.
Thijs De Ridder: The Glue and the Grinder
Right behind him, I’ve got Thijs De Ridder, who feels like the ultimate Odom guy. He plays with energy, can finish around the rim, hit midrange shots, and bring toughness inside. Expect something like 13 points per game, a few thunderous rebounds, and plenty of moments where you yell “LET’S GO THIJS!” even if you’re not totally sure you’re saying his name right.
Balanced, Dangerous, and Deep
That’s the beauty of this group — it’s not top-heavy. I’m calling for five players averaging between 6 and 10 points, which means on any given night, someone new can be the hero. Maybe it’s Elijah Gertrude with a chase-down block and a three. Maybe Chance Mallory gets hot from deep. Maybe Sam Lewis goes off in an ACC game and breaks X.
This team’s got options — and that’s what wins you close games in February.
The Record: 22–9, 12–6 ACC
Here’s my prediction: Virginia finishes 22–9 overall, 12–6 in the ACC, and earns a 6 seed in the NCAA Tournament.
They’ll frustrate a couple of ranked teams, pull out some wild wins, and by March, they’ll be one of those teams nobody wants to see in their bracket.
Final Thought: The Start of Something
The Odom era might not bring a national title right away — but it’s going to bring back excitement, movement, and confidence. And if this team grows the way I think it can, the 2025–26 Hoos could be the bridge between the Bennett foundation and something brand new.
Different look. Same pride.
So buckle up, Wahoo fans — the ride’s about to start, and it’s going to be a good one.
