The Virginia Cavaliers women’s basketball added more than just experience through the transfer portal—they added a relentless competitor.
In the latest episode of The Cavalier Connection Podcast, new Virginia guard Mary-Anna Asare gave fans an inside look at her journey from VCU Rams women’s basketball standout to Charlottesville newcomer, and why she believes her game is built for the next step in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
A Competitor First
When asked to describe her game, Asare didn’t hesitate.
“I’m a competitor,” she said. “Defense is first and foremost for me. If my offense isn’t going, I’m going to get it going on defense.”
That defensive mindset should fit seamlessly into a Virginia system under Aaron Roussell that emphasizes discipline, movement, and toughness. But Asare isn’t just a defender—she’s evolved into a true three-level scorer, something she takes pride in after carrying a heavy offensive load at VCU.
From Opponent to Perfect Fit
Having faced Roussell’s teams during his time at Richmond Spiders women’s basketball, Asare already knew what she was stepping into.
“Back cuts and threes—that’s what we always prepared for,” she said with a smile. “I’ve always been a fan of his style.”
That familiarity helped make the transition natural. After years of competing against his system, she now sees it as the perfect environment to expand her game—particularly off the ball and as a playmaker.
A Dynamic Backcourt with Kymora Johnson
One of the most exciting aspects of Asare’s arrival is her pairing with returning guard Kymora Johnson.
Asare lit up when discussing her new teammate.
“She’s a competitor like me. She can score at all three levels, and her ability to get others involved—I can learn a lot from that.”
The potential for a versatile, interchangeable backcourt is clear. With both players capable of handling, scoring, and creating, Virginia gains flexibility—and matchup problems for opponents.
Adversity, Growth, and Perspective
Asare’s final season at VCU was cut short by a knee injury that required surgery. What initially looked like a devastating setback turned into something more valuable.
Fully recovered and cleared, she now views the experience as a turning point.
“I’ve never dealt with something like that before,” she said. “It made me appreciate the game so much more.”
The time away also gave her a different perspective—one that strengthened her leadership. Even while sidelined, she made it a priority to stay vocal and engaged with her teammates.
International Experience and Toughness
Asare’s time with Team Canada women’s basketball added another layer to her game.
“FIBA basketball—they don’t call fouls,” she laughed. “You’ve got to play through everything.”
That physical style, combined with exposure to international competition, sharpened her defensive instincts and adaptability—traits that should translate well to ACC play.
Betting on Herself in the ACC
The move to Virginia wasn’t just about fit—it was about challenge.
After proving herself at VCU, Asare wanted to test her game against top-tier competition night in and night out.
“I didn’t want to live with any regrets,” she said. “I wanted to see if I could succeed at the highest level.”
That mindset aligns perfectly with a Virginia program looking to build something sustainable and competitive in the ACC.
Why Virginia? A Decision That Just Felt Right
Interestingly, Virginia wasn’t initially on Asare’s radar. But a late visit changed everything.
“It was the most relaxed visit I’ve ever been on,” she said. “I just had a great feeling.”
Between the coaching staff’s vision, the established culture, and the opportunity to play alongside high-level talent, the decision became easy.
“I committed right there on the spot.”
More Than Basketball
Off the court, Asare brings just as much depth. A graduate of criminal justice and psychology at VCU, she plans to pursue a master’s degree at Virginia while continuing her basketball journey.
She’s also a musician—playing saxophone—and enjoys nature, hiking, and traveling. Her favorite destination? Argentina.
Message to Wahoo Nation
As the interview wrapped, Asare had a simple message for Virginia fans:
“Get ready.”
With her combination of toughness, scoring ability, and competitive drive, Mariana Asare looks poised to make an immediate impact in Charlottesville.
And if her mindset is any indication, she’s not just arriving—she’s coming to compete.
